United Nations Day: A Day to Renew Our Commitment to Peace, Unity, and Global Cooperation
By: Ijaz-ul-Hassan
United Nations Day is observed around the world on October 24 every year. The day highlights the importance of global peace, human rights, mutual respect, justice, and international cooperation. It also conveys a message of unity, encouraging countries around the world to work together to address common challenges.
The United Nations was established on October 24, 1945, following the Second World War. The primary objectives behind its establishment were to protect the world from wars and destruction, promote international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, and advance collective efforts for the welfare of humanity. Today, the United Nations serves as an important platform for dialogue, cooperation, and the peaceful resolution of disputes among countries.
The central message of United Nations Day is that lasting peace cannot be achieved through the use of force alone. It requires tolerance, justice, negotiations, and respect for one another’s rights. The world continues to face serious challenges, including wars, poverty, hunger, climate change, diseases, human rights violations, and refugee crises. To address these issues, the international community must rise above its differences and take coordinated action.
Through its various specialized agencies, the United Nations has played an important role in education, healthcare, children’s rights, food security, humanitarian assistance, and sustainable development. UNICEF works for the welfare of children, while the World Health Organization (WHO) contributes to protecting public health. Other relevant agencies are also actively engaged in promoting human development and assisting people in need around the world. However, further efforts are required to make these initiatives more effective and to achieve lasting solutions to global challenges.
Pakistan is a founding member of the United Nations and has played a notable role in promoting international peace. By contributing military personnel and security officials to United Nations peacekeeping missions, Pakistan has rendered valuable services to global peace and security. Pakistan has consistently supported the peaceful resolution of conflicts, international cooperation, and the protection of the rights of oppressed and vulnerable people.
United Nations Day reminds us that all human beings, nations, and countries are interconnected. The consequences of war, poverty, or environmental destruction in one region can affect the entire world. Therefore, it is essential for global powers to prioritize not only their national interests but also the collective welfare of humanity. They must ensure that international laws are implemented fairly and equally.
On this day, we should renew our commitment to promoting love instead of hatred, dialogue instead of confrontation, and unity instead of division. The true objectives of the United Nations can only be achieved when all countries genuinely uphold the principles of peace, justice, equality, and human dignity.
Peace is everyone’s need, unity is our strength, and serving humanity is our shared responsibility. This is the true message of United Nations Day.
